He was a good kid, but naive and idealistic. They had him for a few years until he worked his way up in the organization to where he saw how the money was really being spent.

I can see your point. But cults exist because people get something they aren’t getting at home. That’s the direct pipeline. Moonies used “love bombing” techniques which infers a lack of something important at home. Neglect can take many forms.
I was lucky. My conservative parents didn’t dropped the ball. But they won’t get the praise that Lansbury’s “parenting” gets here for some reason.
