The Bennard family from Shelby County, Tennessee, suffered a devastating blow Oct. 6 when their two dogs fatally attacked the family’s 2-year-old and 5-month-old.
The dogs, two pit bulls named Cheech and Mia, turned on Hollace Dean, 5 months old, and Lilly Jane, 2, for no discernable reason.
Mom Kirstie Jane Bennard, 30, gave her all to protect her children, using herself as a shield to try to protect Lilly Jane and receiving countless lacerations in the process, according to USA Today.
Despite her sacrifice and efforts during the horrific 10-minute onslaught, the Bennards lost both their precious babies and Kirstie was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
The two dogs had been with the family for eight years and had never shown any signs of aggression, according to the report.
Friends and family have been shocked by the incident, saying the dogs had never given any sign they’d be capable of such an atrocity (though many people have said being a pit bull is sign enough).
“I can promise you those children were her world, and if there was any inkling of danger, she would have never had those dogs near her kids,” Kelsey Canfield, Kirstie’s best friend, told Fox News.
“Those children were everything to them, and they just have a really long journey ahead.”
The dogs were euthanized on Thursday, according to a tweet by the Shelby County Sheriff.
“As of now it looks like there isn’t any permanent damage other than a heart that will never heal.

The most popular bloodline when it comes to Pitbulls is the Colby Pitbull. This particular bloodline originated 100 years ago. It’s their physical features and general temperament that makes Colby Pitbulls popular, well-respected, and loved.
PLUS THE FACT THAT THEY WILL RIP THE THROAT OUT OF YOUR TODDLER. JUST LIKE THEY DID TO COLBY’S NEPHEW.
Bull Terrier Kills Child
Grabs Him by Throat at Newburyport.
Bert Leadbetter, 2 Years Old, of Lynn on Visit.
Uncle John P. Colby Owner of the Dog
NEWBURYPORT, Feb 2, 1909 — Bert, the 2-year-old son of Mr and Mrs Walter Leadbetter of Lynn, was killed this afternoon by a fighting bull terrier, owned by his uncle, John P. Colby, at 36 Franklin st.
Mrs Leadbetter and her son had come here to visit her brother, who is a dog fancier. The little fellow wandered into the yard where the kennels are.
The dog sprang at the child’s neck and growling ferociously shook him like a rag. Then the savage animal, dropping its prey, snapped at other portions of the body, inflicting a number of wounds.
Mr Colby ran out, drove the dog away and bore the child into the house. He was faintly breathing, but quickly all signs of life disappeared. Medical Examiner Hurd, who was called, found that the backbone and spine had been broken at the base of the brain. The other wounds, while serious, were not necessarily fatal.
The mother was prostrated. Mr Leadbetter was hastily summoned from Lynn.
Mr Colby was very secretive about the affair and declined to give out any details. The police were not notified. Patrolman Hayes, whose beat is at the south end, heard of the death and reported it to the marshal, who ordered an investigation. The patrolman was finally able to secure the particulars.
No action has been taken relative to the dog. Mr Colby told the medical examiner that his own child3 had played about the kennels and had never been molested. - Boston Daily Globe, February 3, 1909
Why don’t those dogs ever fight like pit bulls?
I meant put down all pits in shelters, don’t adopt them out, even the sweet ones.
Near Memphis. Ukraine is safer.
As for Pit Bulls, they're trash dogs and anyone who would have them in a house with children is a blithering idiot. I'm not for government interference in people's lives so I don't call for outlawing them, but I live in the country and any that I see step onto my land gets shot. That has happened before if you're wondering.
“...was killed this afternoon by a fighting bull terrier...”
Well, there you have it: It was TRAINED as a fighting dog. A dog will act as it has been trained to act. Don’t blame the dog; blame the uncle who trained it.
“I meant put down all pits in shelters, don’t adopt them out, even the sweet ones.”
All my pits were rescues from shelters. All have been great dogs. A dog will reflect its Alpha, which is generally the dog’s owner or handler.
And yet you want to kill all of them that are in shelters; you don’t want them to be adopted, and given a loving, happy home. You want them condemned to death, just because they exist. That means you want to kill my dogs.
“I’m not for government interference in people’s lives so I don’t call for outlawing them, but I live in the country and any that I see step onto my land gets shot. That has happened before if you’re wondering.”
No, you’re for taking the law into your own hands; you’re for making your own laws. Some stray, likely lost and looking for its people, steps onto your land and you summarily kill it.
Real tough guy, you are.
“Why don’t those dogs ever fight like pit bulls?”
They do if they’re trained to.
I'm also not taking the law into my own hands, it's perfectly legal where I live.
Keep your trash dogs inside with your trash self and then you won't have to worry about it.
“Nothing tough about it, just ridding my property of potentially dangerous animals so they don’t attack my animals or family.”
What about other dogs, not pits? Or people? Do you consider people who come onto your land “potentially dangerous,” and thus subject to your summary disposition?
You are judge, jury, and executioner based upon no other criteria than you think you can.
“I’m also not taking the law into my own hands, it’s perfectly legal where I live.”
So, you never thought about calling Animal Control, or whatever you have in your parts, so they can pick it up, check to see if it is chipped, and return it to the owners?
“Keep your trash dogs inside with your trash self and then you won’t have to worry about it.”
Ah, now we get to the heart of the matter. You’re a bigot. I am not surprised.
Only pits and other aggressive dogs. Coyotes bite the dust too as well as venomous snakes. Non-venomous snakes get a pass, see a pattern here? My neighbors and their dogs are welcome on my land and they know it. None of my neighbors own trash dogs like pits, I don't live near any ghettos or trailer parks.
So, you never thought about calling Animal Control, or whatever you have in your parts, so they can pick it up, check to see if it is chipped, and return it to the owners?
There is no animal control where I'm at, and if there was it would take an hour to get there from the county seat in which case one of my dogs, cats, or family members would likely be mauled. I could call the sheriff's department but they're not going to send a deputy across the county for something like that. They're going to ask "why haven't you shot it?".
Ah, now we get to the heart of the matter. You’re a bigot. I am not surprised.
We've also gotten to the heart of the matter with you. You don't give one whit for the danger your animals present to those around you, it's all about you. People like you always trot out the bigot or racist label when they're losing an argument, it's a time honored tradition of your fellow leftists and race pimps. It's the first refuge when you don't have an argument of merit, just try and label someone who disagrees with your preposterous position as a bigot. Do everyone a favor and keep your trash dogs chained to one of the cars sitting on blocks in front of your trailer. It might save some kid's life.
Your not from the country. Any animal that tries to harass or kill farm animals can be killed on the property IAW the law.
Truth be known ‘ought-six’ is an wise, incredible Freeper.
He knows the reputation of the breed. He discernment of the breed is based on his own personal experience.
He probably hates the reputation that the breed has because it stands in opposition to his personal knowledge of the breed. From what I know of
In fact, that is what we all do. ‘Ought-six’ is an outstanding Freeper. Please accommodate his reaction. Especially when our family & pets are threatened. I myself agreed to the comment “to put all pitbulls down.” But, I have a problem with all aggressive threats.
What I can’t understand why the 2-year-old and 5-month-old children were unattended. The mom apparently trusted these dogs. As a mom, & past R.N., I hate when people post photos on Facebook of their newborn lying next to any dog of any breed! We all have them!
Apologies, Storming weather here:
Repost of scrambled Comment #114. LOL
“Truth be known ‘ought-six’ is an wise, incredible Freeper.

He probably hates that reputation the breed has developed because it stands in opposition to his personal knowledge of the breed. It just doesn’t sync.
In fact, we all judge according to our personal experiences. We all make such discernments on our preconceived notions. Especially when our family & pets are threatened. I KNOW ‘Ought-six’ would be the first to protect my family, pets or me!
‘Ought-six’ is an outstanding Freeper. Please try to understand his defensive reaction of the breed.
I myself also agreed to the comment “to put all pitbulls down.” I just have a problem with all aggressive threats. Yet, go figure, I was a Chaplain in a state correctional facility once!
What I can’t understand is why the 2-year-old and 5-month-old children were unattended? Was the Mom on her cell? Busy with mom activities: cleaning cooking, laundry? Yet, I am judging her. The mom apparently trusted these dogs.
As a mom, & past R.N., I hate when people post photos on Facebook of their newborn or little one lying next to any dog of any breed! Obviously, I do not find it cute!
Nope no Pitbulls for me. I think anyone who has one is irresponsible and that’s my opinion and I’m entitled to it. I do think they should be locked up so they can’t hurt anyone else. Preferably they should all be euthanized and that’s my opinion, get rid of that breed.
I never had a chihuahua till last year. I didn’t like them. My husband wanted this one so much, when his friend’s chihuahua had two puppies. I finally said okay, and he is/was a very cute puppy and looked like Snoopy. Very mean and I keep him away from people he doesn’t know. I never had a pet dog bite me. He didn’t want to come out of the tub, he enjoys swimming around and he nicked me. I need to get him neutered and shots, but he manages to remove the two muzzles I bought, and I don’t want him to bite anyone at the vet.
Is your chihuahua neutered and did it change his aggression?
My Chihuahua is not neutered.
He is not typically aggressive.
It is only a rare occurrence with him
“Nope no Pitbulls for me.”
Then don’t get one.
“I think anyone who has one is irresponsible and that’s my opinion and I’m entitled to it.”
Yes, it’s your opinion, and you are entitled to it. Just as I can ignore it, and chalk it up to the irrational fears of a timid soul.
“I do think they should be locked up so they can’t hurt anyone else. Preferably they should all be euthanized and that’s my opinion, get rid of that breed.”
Then why stop there? Just ban all dog breeds and be done with it, once and for all; because, really, they are only just animals, and all of them have the “potential” for aggression.
“We’ve also gotten to the heart of the matter with you. You don’t give one whit for the danger your animals present to those around you, it’s all about you.”
That’s a lie and you know it. The fact I’ve had dogs most of my life and have trained those dogs to behave and be sociable with people and other dogs attests to that.
“People like you always trot out the bigot or racist label when they’re losing an argument, it’s a time honored tradition of your fellow leftists and race pimps.”
Do you even have the vaguest idea of what a bigot is?
Here is the most common definition of a bigot: “...a person who is obstinately or unreasonably attached to a belief, opinion, or faction, especially one who is prejudiced against or antagonistic toward a person or people ON THE BASIS OF THEIR MEMBERSHIP OF A PARTICULAR GROUP.”
That is exactly what you did re: people who have pitbulls. You condemned all of them because they belong to a particular group (pitbull owners).
Moreover, I did not lose any argument: You hate pitbulls, and apparently their owners, as well; I don’t. There is no “argument” present, because there is no right side and there is no wrong side.
“It’s the first refuge when you don’t have an argument of merit, just try and label someone who disagrees with your preposterous position as a bigot.”
I labeled you a bigot because your own words branded you as such.
“Do everyone a favor and keep your trash dogs chained to one of the cars sitting on blocks in front of your trailer.”
There you go again, assuming facts not in evidence simply because you think it justifies your bigotry.
But, for what it’s worth, I live in the wealthiest county in Illinois (or second wealthiest, depending on what study you cite). It is what one might call “established,” and “sedate.” Where I live the residential lots have large yards and lots of trees; we have parks, forest preserves, and hiking trails; within a couple miles of my house are farms, and pastures. Chicago and Cook County have not made their way out here yet (though that could very well be changing: but so far, it hasn’t). So, we are not “toothless hicks” here, as you imply. And there are a LOT of pits and pit-mixes here. Many of the pitbull owners out here are, for the most part, established professionals and tradespeople (you know, the people who make things work and keep them working); and, like myself, comfortable retirees, who have earned what we have through hard work and discipline. Moreover, it would be rare indeed to see a “car on blocks” in this neighborhood; and if there ever were such an unusual sight, it would be taken care of by the County in short order (hell, you’ll get cited if your car in the driveway has a flat tire for more than a week).
So, you see, you really ARE a bigot, because you are quick to condemn a whole group of people you know absolutely nothing about.
