What is this crime of “possession of a firearm”? Was the shooter a prohibited person, or is there some new law I don’t know about? Also, if the shooter was a prohibited person, then the charge shouldn’t be “possession of a firearm” but rather “possession of a firearm by a prohibited possessor”. In which case, what did he do to become prohibited?

In Georgia you can carry concealed if you have a license to do so. That is "shall issue" if there is not criminal record on file for the applicant. Anyone who is convicted of a felony is prohibited from having the license or from firearm possession in general.

The shooters were felons already.
