Natural gas is the cleanest fuel we have.
At least until we have the problems with pure hydrogen transportation and storage solved.
And if you don't believe CO₂ is a pollutant, then NG (mostly methane), is the cleanest already.
Certainly better than burning garbage.

Don't know whether they are still allowed to do it, but the vendors in Philadelphia's blocks-long Italian Market burned garbage and container refuse in metal barrels all along the 9th Street outdoor marketplace throughout the winter months. Amazing that trucks and cars passing by so closely never got lit up that I know of. (Although once, a steer headed for a butcher shop got loose and ran down the street.)
