Female pilot sues Southwest Airlines after colleague dead-bolted door to the cockpit and stripped NAKED in front of her - and claims the company grounded her after she reported the incident

A Southwest Airlines pilot is suing the company, her union and a former colleague who pleaded guilty last year to dead-bolting the cockpit door during a flight and stripping naked in front of her.

Christine Janning alleges that Southwest retaliated by grounding her after she reported co-pilot Michael Haak to the company and the FBI. Janning's suit also notes that Haak remained employed despite an alleged history of sexual misconduct and that managers disparaged her in memos.

Janning also alleges that the Southwest Airlines Pilots Association conspired with the airline and refused to support her after the August 10, 2020 incident. She is suing Haak for sexual assault.

'On the Flight, Cpt. Haak announced to Ms. Janning that this was to be his final flight, and that there was "something [he] wanted to do before retiring,' the lawsuit reads. 'Cpt. Haak then bolt-locked the cockpit door, in violation of Federal Law, such that only he and Ms. Janning were inside and such that no one else could enter.

Flying naked must be a favorite prank with pilots. I know someone who spent a summer flying banners over a beach. On the last day, the pilots flew naked. At least these were men under 30 performing a prank.

Back in the mid 70s when I was starting out in business, there were no anti-harassment laws in place; this kind of thing UNWANTED sexual harassment used to happen to many female employees in many industries. One of my friends told me her boss asked to take her to lunch on her last day of work before her materinity leave, when she was two weeks from delivering her baby. Her boss took her to a restaurant with little private rooms and “took it out” during lunch, saying lewd things. She dumped her drink on “it” and got up and left.

I had a number of disgusting encounters with sexual harassment through the late 80s, until some of the legal protections started to have effect. Fortunately, I don’t frighten easily and was lucky to escape a number of incidents. Being a writer, I left several of them with the lesson not to mess with a sharp wordsmith.

Anger after the fact was a given. Typically, if you refused an advance, you were called a lesbian or a ballbuster, or that you had asked for it by working in a man’s world, or whatever. In most cases, your chance of advancement at that company was now effectively over. It’s why I started my own business and worked it for decades, giving me the ability to avoid this disgusting behavior. When they are paying you by the minute to do your job against a screaming deadline, you have more leverage.

Unless his retirement actually takes effect, he can still be suspended.

Maybe he is taking two weeks for vacation before his actual retirement date begins.

Of course by now. Still that raises the question why the issue wasn’t brought up immediately when that tape could have been retrieved as evidence.

The pilot’s association not backing her makes me think there is more to this. SW Airlines treatment of the issue also make me think she is a chronic complainer too.

The military has dealt with decades of scandals of women raped by superiors or fellow troops not being believed, but rather being harassed, threatened and punished when they reported it—and also servicemen who were raped by a superior officer or as hazing. Why do you think this would be any different?

Do a search on "rape in military."

It’s called a “cockpit” for a reason.

Same for “joystick”
