You are so right!

Add to that the fact that anyone who is an adult is next to impossible to get committed to a mental health facility; you are lucky to get a 72 hour hold. Adults are considered competent to make their own decisions, even when anyone with sense would realize they are no more competent than an 85 year old with dementia, or a young child.

Admittedly there were abuses in the past, but we swung the pendulum way too far the other way.

Somehow being homeless or living in squalor or in jail is more “dignified” than being put into a mental institution.

I've never tried to get someone committed. But you are right. We recently had a 30 something neighbor with 2 kids take a bat and knife after her mom - whom SHE was living off of - and her teen age sons were threatened too.

She was kicked out of her girlfriends house a few days before and the drugs and stress of being kicked out of a lesbian relationship was her tripping point.

back to what happened.. she was arrested for assault and her mom went and bailed her out for ...$200.. that's it $200 ! For assault with a deadly weapon.

She needs the be in a government detox facility. She is a known drug user. And now she's turned violent.

mom is asking for another attack. If it was my adult child, they would be rotting in jail.
