LOL. Scooby Doo has always had love interests and heck, some of them from the 80s and before were far more dodgy than Velma having an understated crush.

Shaggy's has a ridiculous number of girlfriends - he was actually double-dating in one episode in the 70s (Betty and Lucy). And good grief, the 80s... In Boo Brothers he was chased by a very, er, forward, scantily clad Sadie-Mae Scroggins. She had cleavage, camel toe, and spent so much time trying to stick her tongue down his throat that Shaggy ended up more scared of her than the ghosts.



In another 80s film, Reluctant Werewolf, Shaggy had a different girlfriend - Googie. She kisses him on the lips while he's a werewolf, and he has a very visible reaction... and she gets, er, pert?



Fact is, Scooby Doo in the 80s was WAY worse than the 90s and noughties reboots (and yes, there is even a blink-and-you-miss it girl crush in the old material too.)

All things considered - it depends on what bothers people more. Two girls holding hands, recurring eco-goth wiccans, occult rituals, tons of HP Lovecraft references, Shaggy actually falling properly in love (with an alien), Shaggy double-dating, Shaggy getting kissed, Shaggy getting dragged offscreen by a maneating Daisy Duke clone... or Scooby-Doo Meets Kiss.

The problem with not letting Scooby Doo adapt is we wouldn't have had Scoobynatural, which transports monster-hunters Sam and Dean Winchester into their TV, where fanboi Dean has "dibs on Daphne" and Velma lusts after Sam and his very sexy shoulders. This sounds on paper like the worst and most nuts cartoon crossover since Scooby-Doo meets Kiss... It is. And it's brilliant.
