I had a roommate who used to follow the band up the east coast and tape each concert. He had a big case with cassettes - each with a date and location on it.
I’d think it would be boring following a band on tour, wouldn’t each set be about the same? But he loved it.
Over the course of thousands of shows, I don’t think any set was ever the same. Every show was unique. They varied depending on how in sync the band members were, the crowd, the venue, the weather (at outdoor shows during the summer tours).
The Grateful Dead was all about the live experience. You weren’t there to hear them play songs the same way every time, you were there to hear how they would play it THAT night, and to hear and see (and often feel) how the crowd responded to it.
