Are there any non-coal-driven power sources for these EVs?

You have to look closely in the text above.

... hydrogen fuel cell vehicles like the Mirai...

They offer a complementary $15,000.00 or one year supply of hydrogen with every purchase of the Mirai, but the filling stations are only in California.

The hydrogen is right now probably made from fossile fuels but...

Toyota is helping develop a “cow to car” fuel supply model in California. This innovative idea solves two problems if it works. It promises clean hydrogen and robust supply. Cows produce methane, a prominent greenhouse gas through belches, farts, and poop. But, methane is also a source of hydrogen.

So that would do an end sweep around the EVs with giant batteries and the extra charging time.   The Hydrogen fuel cell would be much lighter and makes the electricity onboard the vehicle.   You plug in the hose, wait only minutes, and then travel 400 miles.

The added bonus to the "from the cow to the car concept", is that we still get to eat beef instead of bugs.

Clearly what is what Toyota is banking on for the future.

My daughter was on a road trip to LA from NM when her Prius battery conked out near Flagstaff AZ. Of course, only the dealership could work on the thing and quoted her a few thousands and a few days to get the battery replacement. She said, “no thanks” and traded it in for used non-hybrid on the lot.

These things are built that both the engine and the electrical motor systems have to work for the car to run. You can’t drive it like a regular car when the battery conks out or drive it like an electric car (until the battery runs down) when you’re in a bind instead of needing a tow.

Tesla sales kept skyrocketing through the shutdowns and chip shortages. And EVs use more chips than ICE vehicles.

**********************************

Yeah, I’m sure they could get enough chips when they sold less than 500k cars last year.

I’m also sure Toyota had no problem getting enough chips for 500k cars too. It’s the 10+ million that caused a problem.

It’s also easy for sales to skyrocket when you are at the bottom.

I’m not saying that Tesla will always be at the bottom, but it’s ridiculous to compare their growth to any other manufacture at this point.
It’s easy to double sales, when you have no sales. You either have to grow or go out of business.

While Toyota is still going to work on the Hydrogen angle,
it is increasing its presence in the electric market
significantly in coming years.

The thing that has stopped the hydrogen market from taking
off, is the lack of hydrogen service stations. Frankly, I’m
very surprised that Toyota or a group have not expanded on
the hydrogen stations.

Electric hasn’t been the rage all that long, but there are
networks cropping up all over.

Who is going to buy a car running off hydrogen, if you can only refill it at very few places even in Los Angeles?

Actually, Tesla sales in 2021 came to 936,000 cars.

Toyota is developing hydrogen infrastructure in Japan. It will be applied first in Japan, South Korea, Germany, and China, the technologically advanced countries.
