Historically the USSR and all Communist countries have been socially conservative and anti-homosexual (just like the moslems). Yet the same liberals who savage Putin are silent about those countries.

Probably because most of us feel that those are domestic policies that are the business of the people who live inside those countries. It is up to Russia to determine what its people do, Ukraine to determine what its people do, etc.. Proof of this is that Russia has remained staunchly anti-homosexual why Ukraine hasn't. That actually proves that this is an issue determined by national governments.

To put it differently, policy on gay marriage, etc. in the United States isn't impacted in the least by whether Ukraine or Russia endorse or oppose those issues. That is entirely up to us, and who we choose to elect.
