I grew up thinking that the ringing was literally the sounds of silence. I did not know I had tinnitus until I became an adult and heard people complaining about it.

I thought the same as a kid. I looked for others reaction to that sudden tone I was sure everyone could hear.

Same here. I find it comforting.

Me, too. I sleep w/noise machine now, but it rarely “bothers” me; I don’t know what it’s like to not have the ringing there.

Yep, have always had it so doesn’t bother me but it is more noticeable now at 60 than as a kid. Still, it is the sound of silence to me. It does get worse with alcohol but that’s it and drops back later.
