I guess it must be a big deal for the American League.
It has been broken 3 times already in the National League.
Mark McGwire-70-1998
Sammy Sosa-66-1998

They cheated. They admitted to cheating or were caught. They were frauds, MLB knew it and used them to restore the game to popularity. Then, MLB was shocked to find out gambling was happening at the casino as they abandoned the players.
Bonds, McGwire and Sosa were notoriously juiced on steroids. In other words, they cheated to get their HRs so baseball is kind of ignoring them, especially the fans. It doesn’t look like they will ever be inducted to the HOF either. Just like Lance Armstrong who’s considered persona non grata in cycling for the same reason.
All associated with PED. who knows, maybe Judge found a workaround. Doesn’t matter much, really.
They were all cheaters...so Matris’s [and now Judge’s] real record stands.
For those who care about such things.
