SANTA CLARITA, Calif. — Wildlife officers on Wednesday were tracking a mountain lion that attacked a 7-year-old boy and prompted the closure of a sprawling Southern California park, authorities said.
The child and his father were walking up stairs at Pico Canyon Park near Santa Clarita around dusk on Monday when a cougar emerged from brush and bit the boy on the buttocks, said Capt. Patrick Foy with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
Foy said the father, who was walking behind, heard his son cry out and charged toward the big cat. “The lion let go and retreated back into the brush,” he said.
The boy was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, Foy said.
“It was a pretty traumatic episode for him, but he's expected to be fine,” he said.
Wildlife officials sampled the bite wound to confirm that a mountain lion was responsible and to obtain a DNA profile of the animal.
The father said the cougar didn’t appear to be wearing a GPS collar from the National Park Service, which tracks and studies big cats in Southern California. The park service said it doesn't have a collared mountain lion in the area and the park is outside its research zone, according to Foy.

Dad screwed up. He should have given the kid the credit, said the kid fought the lion off with a punch to the face. Kid coulda gone back to school strutting like a rooster. Might have set him up for some amazing badassery success in life.
Wow, it sounds like California is serious about catching that cat... What, is the boy black or something?
Now that boy is going to have one great story to tell everybody while growing up.
I can just picture his first date. “I got bit on the rump by a mountain lion when I was 7 years old.”
Just picture him as a grandpa with grandkids on his knee. “Let me tell you about the time a mountain lion bit my butt when I was your age. You kids have it so easy today!”
“Oh grandpa, there you go again!”
Impossible
Cougar bears wolves sharks don’t hurt people that’s a right wing fascist white supremists dimestic terrorist conspiracy theory.
Just ask any gov or state wildlife biologist.
We can learn much from animals,, I hear they know how to travel faster than light .
This is usually the behavior of young hungry cats. Mature cats with food will stay away from people.
Damn cougar wasn’t wearing its GPS collar; thank God it had a mask on at least.
In 1990, California banned the hunting of Mountain Lions. Now they have them out the wazoo!
Don’t let the cat bite your butt on the way out the door
Bad kitty!
We knew the family of a small child who was mauled in an Orange County park back in 1986.
The lion picked her up by her head and carried her off causing severe and permanent injuries.
This little guy is indeed fortunate.
“...walking up stairs at Pico Canyon Park near Santa Clarita around dusk...”
The father trailed a small prey animal (his son) behind him in a wilderness park at many predators’ preferred time to hunt. California Parks have all sorts of information and warnings about this sort of behavior. He put his son in mortal danger, and the mountain lion too. Great work dumbass.
"If you live in 'Carolinia' - there are lions there, so get vaccinated!"
Where the H@ll is their "research zone" - on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills?
Instead of saying he will paddle his butt the father in the future will say to the boy “I will have a mountain lion bite you on your butt if you do not do your chores!”
