From what I’ve read, which is admitted pretty cursory, the long-term issue could be salt water getting on the inside of the pipes. Unless it is fixed and cleansed pretty quickly, the damage might become too severe too repair.
There must be a procedure for flushing the water out once it’s ready for use.
