For the sake of simplification, science mostly assumes that we are purely material beings in a material world. Unfortunately, for most, that simplifying assumption has hardened into adamant, ideological belief -- even though modern physics has established that matter and consciousness are entangled at the quantum level.

On balance, the traditional Christian view of human life is possible and makes sense: we are not mere material bodies but conscious beings, spirits or souls if you will, inhabiting material bodies. At death, we pass from our body into an afterlife. Yet the process is not always smooth and certain and is subject to misdirection through circumstances, intervention by other spirits, or the fear or refusal of the spirit of the dead.

In sum, your account is plausible.
