1779 The frigate, Bonhomme Richard, commanded by John Paul Jones, engages HMS Serapis. During the battle, with his ship nearly destroyed, he refuses to surrender, shouting "I have not yet begun to fight". With assistance from the Continental frigate Alliance, John Paul Jones captures Serapis. Two days later, Bonhomme Richard sinks under the sea.
1944 USS West Virginia (BB 48) reaches Pearl Harbor and rejoins the Pacific Fleet, marking the end of the salvage and reconstruction of 18 ships damaged Dec. 7, 1941
One Bonhomme Richard destroyed as the result of battle defending this country.
One Bonhomme Richard destroyed by fire set by a pissed off sailor (pronouns unknown).
Not the U.S. Navy I knew...
Fortunately, the USS West Virginia was deliberately run aground during the Pearl Harbor attack, thereby saving one more capital ship to return to battle.
I believe it was the Nevada that managed to get under steam but beached when the captain realized they would not make open water.
The day the music died. Eighteen midshipmen [sophomores of more than 100 suspected] have been expelled or resigned from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., after an investigation concluded they cheated on a remote physics exam in December 2020, according to school officials.
Let’s see how many cheating scandals does that make at the Naval Academy? Then there is the fat guy who bribed naval officers. Ships ramming ships. Drug use. Sinking morale. Do we still have a Navy?
That was not West Virginia. USS Nevada BB36 was able to get under way during the attack. She was hit with one torpedo and 6 bombs she beached herself to keep from sinking in the channel. West Virginia was moored at the time she was hit with at least 6 torpedoes. She sank an even keel. Had it not been for some quick action to counter flood her inboard tanks, she would have rolled over like Oklahoma did.
the days of iron men in wooden ships have passed us by.
USS Nevada is the one that got up steam, but beached rather than chance sinking in the main channel.
