The cost of a Tesla is the equivalent of 17,544 gallons of gasoline at current average price here in Hellinois.
I don’t know of a single person who’ll purchase and burn 17,544 gallons of gas in their entire lifetime. Conclusion: the cost of a Tesla makes zero economic sense for damn’ near everyone.

I’ve done this calculation many times — even with a much cheaper vehicle it makes no sense to switch to save on gas.
But a very large portion of the population is incapable of solving simple math problems. Especially EV fanboys.
I don’t disagree with your common sense final conclusion, but I do know a lot of people that will burn that much gasoline. If they get 20 MPG, 20 x 17,544 = 359,880 miles.
Before I retired, that would be about 5 years.
And my job was not driving, The driving part was required to get me to where I needed to be.
There are literally hundreds of thousands who drive that much, and they are not truck drivers.
But I never would have been able to do it in a Tesla.
