I think they are finding a problem that doesn’t exist.
All you have to do to give yourself a proper perspective as to whether people objecting to placing "diversity" into Tolkien's world is ask yourself what would happen if a white person were put into the role of a black historical figure or mythological figure. We all know the answer to that question.
And the author is wrong. Tolkien described the skin color of a number of his creations, especially the elves, and he described them as particularly fair. In fact, that was nearly a defining characteristic of the elves, something that differentiated them from the swarthier humans.

A few years ago there was a musical called Hamilton that replaced all the white founding fathers with a cast of black people.
If a troupe of white people performed Hamilton, would that be racist?
