I think Independence Day did a decent job at showing our futility on that point.

I also think this is really about softening us further of the deception that is to come.

Yep. The tic-tacs seen and reported by the Navy were not only solid enough to be picked up by sensors but were moving at more than 50,000 mph...and then making right-angle turns at that speed.

Of course, it is possible that such "craft" were in our plane of existence while in another dimension concurrently, which allowed us to see them and pick them up on our sensors, but prevented them from being obliterated by our laws of physics (as they slipped back and forth between the two dimensions).
