As they get older, I would imagine the kids who did the bullying might be a bit scared to sleep at night, knowing that they took the life of a 13 year old who had his entire life ahead of him and had probably done them no wrong of any type. Very sad.
I do wonder of a bad conscience does haunt those responsible for such tragedies. I suspect, not much. As a boy I remember hearing an older man, in a barber shop conversation, recall being directly involved, when he was young, in a lynching that later turned out was of an innocent negro. He had no apologies and said the man lynched was strung up because of his universally bad reputation, so even if he was innocent of the crime of rape killing him was a generally good thing for the community. And the real rapist was caught , tried, and executed , so the event was like a rwofer for the town.
