Too many people on this thread are living in the past. The schools are filled with ferrels now and the advice being given will get kids knifed, shot or beaten to a pulp by a gang. The days of hurt them so they won’t hurt you are gone.

You are correct. Also, unless you come back with brutal force of biblical proportions, drag them into court, press charges through the police and not the resource officer, threaten to or actually sue, get to the parents and raise holy hell that hits their wallet, most schools do little to stop it.
I am blessed that my youngest son is in a school that protects him. He is special needs, so when he was attacked for wearing a Trump lanyard that his brother gave him as a gift and it was all caught on video, the police were completely on our side.
I gave the school the name and phone number of my attorney and told them to explain to the parents that if their little darling or any of his friends so much as said a word in my son’s direction, I would press criminal charges, bury them in legal bills in civil court, take it to the media, and THEY would be paying my son’s college tuition. I had time enough, money enough, and fury enough that I would make their lives hell. I said this all in a calm, relaxed voice with a smile on my face.
The smile made everyone nervous.
What did the officer say? “Ma’am, I like your style. I will let them know.”
Apparently, he did. They stay far away from my son and zero retaliation.
Before this school, the other ones wanted to sweep things under the rug.
