Long before Agents of SHIELD, Cloak and Dagger, or Daredevil, Marvel tried to make its mark on TV...with mixed results....

I recall going to see the movie (which must have been the pilot) for the 1978 Spider Man series at a local theatre for a Saturday afternoon show. Believe it had David White (Bewitched’s Larry Tate) as Parker’s boss Jameson. Not a bad movie at all, was good fun. Also had the legendary Thayer David (my favourite actor from the first Rocky movie).
The Japanese Toei Spider-Man series was interesting, to a point. Seems like all Japanese superhero shows follow the “monster of the week” formula, even more so when a giant robot is involved.
right?!
there is a lot more detail out there that this article leaves unmentioned!
I remember also as a kid watching the dreadful PBS show, The Electric Company....because it had a Spider Man segment. It was horrible.
well said
I played the theme song from the old Amazing Spiderman cartoon series and he went absolutely bananas! "Play it again! Play it again!"
Liked The Incredible Hulk as well, was a must watch for me back between 1979 and 1981 when it was on Friday nights at 8:00 on CBS (WHEC Rochester NY). It was also kind of funny to later learn that Ellen Bry was on the Spider Man TV series as she was a TV crush of mine back in about 1983-1984 when she was on St. Elsewhere.
you realize that on marvel.com
for like $59 a year
you can access all the old comics, right? including the original spider man?
I’m reading through the original Avengers now. It’s great fun.
I recently read that Jack Kirby did a cameo on the CBS Hulk series.
He was playing a police sketch artist. A witness to something Hulk did was describing him. The sketch artist was drawing, to try to give detectives a lead.
But Kirby drew his original Hulk, from the original comic book....rather than the Lou Ferigno version. Immediately recognizable to fans.
Isn’t that just super cool?
(Kirby was a genius by the way.....).
Electric Company was tolerable.
Sesame Street I couldn’t stand.
I preferred reruns of Perry Mason.
