Putin Forces 'Confused' by Ukraine Strikes, Headed for Surrender: General

A former U.S. general has forecast the surrender of Russian forces in Kherson, a strategic city in Ukraine.

The Kherson region has been almost entirely controlled by Russian troops since March, when it became the first major city to fall during Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine. Ukrainian forces have launched a counteroffensive to take back the critical port city.

Retired U.S. Army Lieutenant General Mark Hertling commented Monday on a Ukrainian soldier's video from the frontlines showing destroyed Russian positions in Kherson.

According to Hertling's analysis on Twitter, the footage indicated "extremely poor soldier discipline" and "horrible fieldcraft/training" in the Russian army. It appeared that lower-level leadership was in crisis while senior leaders were not circulating information, said Hertling. Meanwhile, morale was plunging and the potential for disease was rising, he said.

The ex-general predicted Russia's "future surrender" in Kherson.

“ Putin and a small clutch of pliant military advisers are said to be directing the war in Ukraine.”

He sent some of Russia’s most respected units across the River in Kherson, like the 7th Airborne Division, Spetznaz Brigades and Guards units. Now the bridges have been blown behind them.

The loss of those units would be kind of epic, and a worse domestic political event than just the numbers would indicate. Like if the whole 82d Airborne Division was destroyed or captured.

I’ve asked this before but why does this BBC promote they’re banned in North Korea?

The only difference I could see was their stance on homosexuality - and I’m not sure about that either.

Is SiriusXM even available in North Korea?

“Do you think that Putin could continues in power after such a loss?”

It is hard to replace Putin, because it is so dangerous to conspire with others.

I think that at some point, somebody is likely to kill him. I don’t think it likely that he can retire peacefully after having gone this far. Its possible, but it doesn’t seem to be like him.

When things get intolerable, he will have to go, one way or another. He is the only one who can sufficiently take the blame, to reset relations with the world. Military and economic pressures seem likely to continue mounting.

Like you, I do not see an easy way out for Putin and Russia from the combination of ills they have heaped on their plate: reverses on the battlefield and a military that is breaking down; economic sanctions from Western economies; political isolation; an industrial base that is inadequate and in decline; and, as you point out, no way to change leaders without a major political convulsion and likely an assassination. Even Russia’s oil and gas sector is thought to be on the brink due to inadequate investment and exploration.

Have you forgotten that Putin has already announced that he is retiring a specific day in March 2023? Also interesting that the tyrant of Chechnia is talking about stepping down. Anyone have info or credible conjecture about what is going on with the “suicides” and murder of families of 10 Gazprom and Lukoil executives this year? That number includes the 2 Lukoil executives who have practiced flying from 6 story hospital windows this past week.

Do you see Putin as the “time to retire” type of autocrat? Or as the “I am staying because I am still needed” type? My guess is that Putin is the latter type, assuming that he has a choice.

I see Putin as the “I would rather turn over my office to a trusted confederate who I can control while dealing with my declining health” type.

Where though does Putin go? There is no safe sanatorium or sunny gated retirement community for retired despots. And what guarantee is there so that once a successor is installed that they do not slip the reins and decide to blame Putin and his gang for the mess?

It sucks to be an old dictator. Life is about choices, and Putin made his 30 years ago.
