Liza Minelli (and her mother) generate strong reactions. Neither is a favorite of mine but Cabaret was a great movie.

I really love a large number of Broadway Musical films but I honestly have never been able to watch even a few minutes of Cabaret.

I grew up hearing my parents’ original Broadway recording with Jill Haworth and I loved it.

I saw a Broadway touring group’s revival of “Cabaret” in Houston in the 90s. Lea Thompson (“Back to the Future,” “Caroline in the City”) played Sally Bowles and we were pleasantly surprised to see that she had a great voice and stage presence for Broadway theater. She gave a very moving performance.

It totally is. It’s a very sad movie, but it’s extremely well done.

Semi-pornographic is about right for those Scopitone videos. They can range from mild to salacious, with frequent detours into cringe-inducing territory. It was essentially a video jukebox, seen mostly in pubs and similar places. More popular in Europe than the U.S.

No one can top Natash Richardson’s Sally. She sings it better than Liza, but above all, whereas Liza is just singing a song with no meaning, Natasha actualy emotes and acts the part - you believe that she is singing in a crappy club in Berlin in the 30s. She takes it to another level.

When I was young, I was a Liza Minnelli look alike. Not by a long shot anymore! Liza and I have grown into our own faces!

The song Cabaret is an anthem to hedonism. What a sad and pathetic worldview. When I was in high school (in the 1970s), my school put on a production of Cabaret. At the time, I thought it was wonderful. The overall theme is a cautionary tale. Unfortunately, today America is going down the same road as 1930s Germany. But we ought not be surprised, as the fault lies in the hearts of sinful man, and that can never be remedied by politicians or government policy, or even MAGA, as commendable as that movement may be. Only revival, born of the Holy Spirit, which turns men’s hearts in repentance to their Savior, can bring about the change that is so desperately needed.
