JEFF POWELL: Serena Williams is NOT the GOAT, despite the worshipful cult of adoration to feed her ravenous ego. It is right to celebrate an amazing career at her US Open farewell... but don't forget her long list of sins, too

If Serena Williams did indeed drown her sorrows with the noise of her own voice by going to a karaoke booth after losing her maybe or make-believe goodbye game at the US Open, it is probably just as well.

If, instead, she had turned to social media in search of buckets more of the delirious deification which cascaded onto that twirling head in the Arthur Ashe stadium, those tears would have turned from 'happy' to horrified.

By no means everyone, it transpires, subscribes to the worshipful cult of adoration upon which Queen Serena was transported from Flushing Meadows to evolution.

'Good riddance,' best sums up the feelings of countless Twitterers. Many more posted messages of what can most politely be classified as distaste for the intemperate outbursts which have pockmarked her 23 years as the dominatrix of women's tennis.

Of course there are myriad tributes out there, as well, to feed a ravenous ego. But the adulation is far from universal.

That is likely to come as a surprise to those who watched – and more importantly listened – to the televising of Serena's third-round defeat by Ajla Tomljanovic. The rapture in the stands was surpassed by the genuflection in the commentary boxes.

She used to be a nice looking young woman, but later turned into a beefy “monster”.

I’ve never really been a fan, but she’s had much tougher competition that Court faced in her era. Losing her temper in a comment to a line judge or two over the decades does not make her a less great tennis player.

And yeah, she has had an advantage in size and strength over many competitors, but so have LeBron, Gronk, Giannis, Big Papi, etc.

Like the “media” kiddies like to say, “She was a credit to her race.”

It’s more than losing her temper with the line judges it’s also be a very sore loser and poor winner.

Goodbye to an ugly person, both physically and emotionally.

She’s a bully and a narcissist.

I’m happy to see her and her doubles partner (Venus) lose.

Now she can go to Hollywood and be with all the other gigantic egos.

Serena’s supposed to be a gentleman?

She should stick around long enough to play against the next up-and-coming “transgender woman” player, yes?

Many of the best athletes today are sore losers and poor winners. That’s not factored into fans’ assessments of how good they are as players. How good as human beings, perhaps; but not even really so much that at the pro level.

Her size and power advantage obviously made her more successful at the game then others of more normal proportion

Kind of the Michelle Obama of Women's tennis.

I’ve watched one women’s tennis match in my life.
I was deathly ill and lying on my couch. Evert vs Navratilova came on the TV but I was so sick I couldn’t get up to change the channel.

It was hell.

Yea, the issue I have is that I dislike seeing Serena Williams ugly face plastered everywhere in the media. It offends me!

Maybe once it was a peaceful suburb, but I’ve heard that after the Watts riots in 1965 many middle-class residents moved away - Watts and Compton being adjacent to each other.

That’s when it all went pear-shaped: only four years later, one-time peaceful Compton had become a terrible crime hotspot, alas :-(

“I’m happy to see her and her doubles partner (Venus) lose.”

I thought I was going to get a case of contact diabetes from the sugar-on-steroids worship those two got from the commentators as they were getting their butts kicked by the Czechs.

All-time tennis records – Women’s singles

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All-time_tennis_records_%E2%80%93_Women%27s_singles

Fewer titles than Margaret Court, Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert, Billie Jean King, Steffi Graf, Evonne Goolagong, and Suzanne Lenglen.

We watched the last set of Serena’s last loss.
The fans in New York were an embarrassment to the city, state and nation. They screamed and cheered at Williams’ good shots but did not even touch their palms in a clap, or holler in approval, of ONE play that Tomjanovich made.
The post match interview was all about Serena and left the winner standing in front of her bench.
This was a rotten slight of the winner and all about the loser fading into oblivion. I am so glad to know that I won’t see the Williams sisters again.
SERENA WILLIAMS ENDS HER CAREER WITH A LOSS. End of story!
