LE invariably start at the center and work their way out. If a divorce was in the works then would explain the husbands quick lawyering up. I doubt the husband hired Cleotha in any capacity.

Barring knowing the divorce back story I still lean to the church/Cleotha connection.

I think the husband got tired of his now, most likely deceased wife, bringing home strays in a Convict of the month lotto. She finally found one that bites.
