I’ve never done a cryptogram. Is there a typical starting point?
Shorter words? Common letters? etc...

Yes, short words and common letters are a good starting point. HAL helps. The most common English letters are

ETAIN in that order. This one is easy.

A single letter word preceded by a two letter word in a four word phrase is a very predictable starting point. Then later, there is a three letter word ending with the same two letters as the two letter word you already solved. And that word is preceded by two two letter words both starting with a letter you already solved. Now there are more words you can complete and you are off..
