I haven’t read the article yet(!) But I recall a similar finding was published several years ago — along the lines of the wave front but not the photons can exceed the speed of light for the medium.

Research group demonstrated it over decade ago, so they claim.
Not a new finding. It was described mathematically in the 1800’s.
