Interesting. I’ve heard that the structure of some houses, are not strong enough to support solar panels. So while some people want solar, their houses may not be able to accomodate.

I’ve heard that the structure of some houses, are not strong enough to support solar panels.
The average weight for a residential solar panel is around 40 pounds. They are approximately 5.4 feet long and 3.25 feet wide, which works out to about 2.3 pounds of weight per square foot.

I live an in older neighborhood. While out on my walks over the years I’ve seen housing crews bring in particle board because shingles were only stapled to the 2X4’s in the roof frame.

I don’t think that’s the issue... it’s simply a matter that the extra weight wasn’t part of the design calculations or included when the code requirements were initially established. If you are in the north, part of the code requirements reflect the anticipated snow load. With solar panels, that could be snow load plus the panels and this is over and above what was allowed for at the design stage (ignoring for the moment the issue of whether the snow will slide off the solar panels).
