I would guess that the bees had a hive in a hollow in the truck with a small external opening. If he didn't see or just ignored the bees around the opening, I could understand how it happened.

Yep. I make it a point to look carefully for beehives and wasp nests when I trim my trees.

What made it worse for him is he got stuck in the tree and couldn't get down. He was basically hanging there getting stung until the fire department brought him down.

On the plus side, every bee that stung him died so there's that.
