Re pie crust.....I don’t know your recipe, but there is a tablespoon of vinegar in the Tenderflake recipe, which always works out. I’m sure you could use cider vinegar. Now that I think of it, Tenderflake is a Canadian thing, so whatever lard you can get. I never use shortening.
Tips.....make sure everything is cold - cut in the lard when it’s cold, use cold water, etc. As it warms, it falls apart more easily.
What I do is roll it out (I am very liberal with tossing the flour around so nothing sticks) then fold it in half before lifting it gently onto the pie. Lift it by putting your hands under it more than grasping it by the edges.
Let me know if you want the Tenderflake recipe for crust and I’ll send it.

I had the neatest Revelation yesterday, I was waiting at the vet for 2 hours because Cooper was acting pretty strange, tilting his neck to the right and whining. He ended up being okay though. But next to me, also waiting as walk-ins, was a lady with a shopping cart full of cat carriers and Rescue kittens. And the guy next to her had a little cage with three kittens in it. He said his wife feeds them and he brings them in to get vaccinated and fixed. He had a pretty strong accent and seemed to be one of the really good locals, although I couldn’t understand much of what he said because he sort of mumbled. The rescue lady with the shopping cart of kittens was talking about the queen and how she wanted to go visit europe. He sort of zoned out and was just playing with his kittens through the bars of the cage.
She was talking about the luxurious palaces and clothing. I said it’s probably not that great because they really don’t own anything, it’s not like they could sell the palace. And she had a lot of responsibilities. And I’m not sure how much she really owns of it all. Well he perked up with that and said that’s where we’re headed, where none of us will be allowed to own anything. The other lady kept talking but I looked over at him and nodded. He was quite alert at that point. And probably would have liked to talk about it more.
That reminded me of some of my conversations with my former neighbors. I would think they had been reading free republic. When it came to the state of the country, they seemed incredibly informed and knowledgeable and aware of where we’re headed. And they had plans what to do - one guy wasn’t making any money on his cows but he kept a herd because he figured it would be valuable when everything collapsed. Same with the gardens they were growing and some of the older vehicles they were keeping.
Anyway it just occurred to me that God was taking care of these people. In other matters, they’re not as alert or aware of things, but because they are doing their very best to follow His path and live righteous lives, I think He is guiding and preparing them.
Didn’t look like any MAGA people to me!

I bet you would be appalled, I made a pie crust out of shortening powder a few weeks ago. I’m mainly just trying to figure out what I can do with this stuff. It wasn’t very flaky but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.

It’s probably just me, CB. I’ve just always used lard. I think I tried shortening but didn’t do well with it....but it could have just been something I did.
So, I mentioned that my should-be daughter-in-law gave me this pie funnel a few days ago. It’s a stoneware red bird that you sit in the middle of the pie and it brings the steam from inside the pie up and out. Well, I ordered the cutest red pie plate and got it yesterday. Perfect color match. So now I just have to go and pick a few Paula Reds off the tree and I’ll whip up a nice apple pie to say thank you for the pie bird.
