Disney couldn't renew the copyright, so can't blame them for this. The copyright period expired. Finally!

Copyright periods are too long anyway. Initially, they were for seven years. Then they were extended to 14 years.

Around 1909 they were extended again to 28 years, renewable for another 28.

In 1972 they were extended to, I think, life of the author plus something, or 75 years for hired work.

In the 1990s they were extended yet again to nearly a century.

Public domain is a good thing. Copyright terms should be shorter.

No, they ask for copyright extensions all the time.

They have also amended the copyright law multiple times as well to extend copyright lengths, at the lobbying of companies including Disney.

If the republicans have any stones at all when they recapture st least one house they’ll let the copyright on Steamboat Willie expire. I want to buy a case of Willie toilet paper

A lot of Disney products are just “disnified” public domain. You can make a Snow White, Cinderella movie tomorrow. Jist can’t use Disney’s version.

Those copyright laws you mention were mostly changed by congress, specifically for Disney. Next congress should repeal all of them.

If copyrights were shorter then, yes, we might get ridiculous stuff like this, but we might also have gotten better Star Trek TV shows and movies, and better Star Wars sequels.
