I guess I wouldn’t see the GC as a place to commit suicide. It’d be death by a thousand bumps.
I’ve never been to the GC but I’ve been to the Canyonlands in Utah. My three young kids with me the first time I was there. I didn’t mess around with them. We kept good distances. But even if they weren’t there, there would have been no getting too close.

The desert is unforgiving.
Hiking in 100 degree plus temps is usually not a good idea. Especially so if you are 59 years old.
I had one harrowing call on a south-facing hill in 90+ temps. Ran out of water, no shade, blazing hot sun. Scared me to death. That was the end of high-temp hikes for me.
