Wow, I never read all that into it. I just thought that the narrator and Billy Joe had a fling (and they were throwing flowers off the bridge together) but then she broke up with him after church on Sunday. He then committed suicide and now she feels guilty.

Lot of people here confusing the song with the stupid movie, which had almost nothing to do with the true meaning of the song. Also, speculating on some kind of hidden meaning is to further misunderstand the song. Bobbi told us what it was about: the self-centeredness of people even when it comes to carelessly gossiping about the death of another human being.
