hmmmm. A voice over IP call could do it (use a VPN), but still to terminate on a ‘real’ phone network, the originating call has to properly authenticate to the next network.

That's because there were log files and he openly talked about it. If their VPN doesn't keep logs, your pretty much assed out trying to find someone. They also could be using a public free internet host (Starbucks, a local hotel) and then log into a VPN. GOOD LUCK finding them. Why do you think so many sites ban VPN IP addresses these days?
