In most cases probably not.
But I’m getting old so I may be giving today’s parents too much credit.

This is the modern version of playing doctor, basically. It seems bizarre to us but these young adults have grown up with screens their entire lives. The online world and real world are basically one and the same to them. Their online “friends” are not total strangers in their minds.
