His subconscious mind did it! I'm not being sarcastic - anybody who points a gun at another person and pulls the trigger, even thinking that the gun is unloaded, is acting out murderous intent. So the psychiatrists would say.

There was an old Columbo episode - I think it was the first episode - called “Murder by the Book.” Martin Milner’s character opens the door, where an associate of his points a revolver at him and pulls the trigger as a so-called “prank.” It wound up being empty, even though it should have been treated as loaded.

I already knew where the episode was headed, because no reasonable and sane person would do something like that. I also knew that I would never be talking to that person again if it were me.
