What you describe sounds more infectious in nature, more rapid progression.
lepto is an uncommon bacterial infection, a spirochete, attacks the kidneys, causes failure, pretty quickly.
The reservoir is the urine and feces of wild mammals, particularly raccoons and coyotes, hence the vaccine for dogs exposed to same.
You can treat it if caught early, most MD's would not have it on the radar.
Bottom line, don't expose yourself to wild animal urine and feces, especially with open sores or wounds on your hands etc.
