I wonder if the bear had some help getting into the house. Like in “Jeremiah Johnson”.

It was actually a .22 Long. And she shot it from the side of the bear.

Not the same incident.
The woman I mentioned was hanging laundry at her homestead.
If I recall correctly it would have been in the 90’s.
Person who told me about it was working for Alaska game department at the time and made the report.

Actually, she brained it right through the side of the skull. She shot it from ambush and it didn’t know she was there. She was down wind and it was getting to close.
A 22LR will easily punch through a bear skull with a flat angle.
The photos of the skull are out there showing where she hit it. The first shot brained it because she was very experienced and knew it’s anatomy well. As insurance she fired 8 or 9 more single shots to the skull. Every single one penetrated.

Wow. What are the odds of that happening?

If I were in bear country I would carry my S&W 500. Nothing less.

Be careful then. I’m lucky to live in an area of Texas that do not have bears.

A bear visited the CHP office and Turckee, California in 2018. It reportedly survived the encounter with a couple of CHP officers. If it had been a dog who knows what the outcome of been - oh wait, I’ll take a bet:

We see bears 3 or 4 times a week around the house and lock up everything every night and make sure the windows are down and locked including the car doors on the one that stays outside. When family or friends stay we make sure they remove all food from their cars and lock them. Fun to see them when we’re on the deck which is 12’ off the ground with no stairs or outside access. Also doubles as my tree stand.
Had to put an electric fence around the upper frame to keep the raccoons from getting to the hummingbird feeders.
We get the feral hogs too along with tons of deer and turkeys. Wouldn’t trade it for anything, especially the no visible neighbors.

Not interested in the scenario in the story but kudos to the guy.

Reminds me of the scene in “Animal House” with the college maintenance guy measuring the doorway, then the dead horse, and finally pulling out a chainsaw.

... and now a DA or a Game Commissioner is going to investigate the circumstances of the shooting.

“I’d sure like to know which 40 cal pistol he used, and the magazine size”

I’d like to know what ammo he was using.

From the article: Rachael Gonzales with Colorado Parks and Wildlife says “given the facts of this incident, the homeowner was within his legal rights.”

Rachael Gonzales needs to have her paychecks withheld until she can define inalienable rights.

I went hiking here in North Carolina with my little black lab about 6 months ago. I black bear crossed the trail maybe 20 yards ahead of us. I tried to pull out my smart phone and turn it on to take a pic but he was gone before I could. Had he turned toward us, I’d have pulled my gun out and lit his azz up like a Christmas Tree.

Yes, we have bears here. Florida too has plenty of black bears.

Here is a good write up of the incident where Bella Twin shot the world record grizzly with a .22.

Really!
Rachael Gonzales with Colorado Parks and Wildlife says “given the facts of this incident, the homeowner was within his legal rights.”
Sheesh. Really, Rachael? I’m surprised you didn’t arrest him and throw him in the cooler for a year while you investigate.
