Let’s assume it was Iranians and not the US Navy - wouldn’t the US Navy have detected the Iranians and their missile?
Asking because we’d have to believe:
A) they didn’t detect the threat, even though operating in the area on training exercises - OR -
B) they did and were ordered to hush it up.
If B, we’re back to a coverup involving multiple crews being silenced. If A, nothing sinister, just incompetence, or the Iranians got REALLY lucky not being detected?
Keep in mind the one piece of “evidence” supporting terrorists was the slip by that Clinton admin senior official (Panetta) letting “TWA 800” slip out when listing terror attacks.
My guess is that they did detect it, but couldn't be sure if it came from one of their ships or not. Each ship may have thought the other one did it and it was an "oh sh*t!" moment for all of them.
I can see each ship being told to shut up about it initially, and the fact that none of them fired it was probably established fairly quickly.
The thought occurs to me that the perpetrators probably informed the family, and the family probably informed the Iranian government, which immediately informed Washington that they had nothing to do with it and it was rogue elements which had perpetrated it.
I don't know how the US authorities could have acted so quickly to quash everything without someone telling them what was up in time for them to quash everything.
I do know my friend had some strangely interesting specifics about what was told to me.
