I hate to break this to you, but what we know today as the "First Amendment" was not actually the first amendment proposed to the U.S. Constitution. It was the actually the third proposed amendment. The first two proposed amendments were never ratified, hence the third proposed amendment became "Amendment I."
So, I dunno, you may wish to rethink your basic thesis.
