I used to drink way too much. I quit by weaning. If weaning had failed, I was going to a 12-step program (I'm not a joiner so the 12-step program was my last resort).

A few things I learned by quitting alcohol:

Drinking doesn't help get you through depressing times. Alcohol is what makes them depressing.

Each day without alcohol is better than the one before because you just keep feeling better and better.

The guilt goes away and is replaced by self-respect and pride.

You realize that you were a drug addict (alcohol is a drug)...and that your health will return (really! brain plasticity is real).

Being in control is wonderful. Being drunk is embarrassing.

It's a lot easier to quit drinking than you think it is. It does take work, but it is the most rewarding work you have ever done.

It is one of the most loving things you can do for your family.

The urge to drink will eventually go away and you will find life is manageable after all. In fact, life becomes fun again even if you can't remember it ever being fun.

There is life--real life--after getting sober. Life is still trouble, but sobriety feels so good that you don't care.

You will find that sobriety brings wisdom that never-drinkers don't have. That's what happens when you fight a battle (sobriety) and win. The fight/victory has a wisdom attached to it.

Remember too that sobriety is a journey, not a destination.
