Most people, including myself, had never heard of her until she got arrested in Russia.
The WNBA is almost as popular as women’s golf.
The only women’s sports that anyone other than the parents of the players care about are gymnastics, figure skating, downhill skiing and soccer.
My niece was a high school hockey player. My brother in law was assistant coach. I went to one game. It was painful.
The good thing about golf, for both men and women, is that it’s one sport you can actually play and enjoy for decades after leaving High School. Skiing is similar in some respects.
Women’s skiing has become popular in the US in the last 15 years because Mikaela Shiffrin(74) and prior to that Lindsey Vonn(82). These two are respectively number two and number one in World Cup race victories. If Shiffrin remains healthy she will most likely beat Vonn for the most World Cup wins ever.
Everybody loves a winner.
Only Ingamar Stenmark(Sweden) has more World Cup victories(86). He is known as the best downhill skier EVER.
Downhill skiing is one of the only sports where both women and men compete on basically the same course. They may shorten the course slightly for the women. It would have been interesting to see Lindsey Vonn compete against someone like Bode Miller in the downhill when they were both in the prime. Skiing is mostly leg and core strength. Not upper body where men are physically superior.
Don’t forget Suzy Chapstick (Chaffee)
Vonn is actually prettier now than when she was competing. She has slimmed down in muscle mass. She used to be very thick in the core with huge leg muscles and small breasts. She actually looks more feminine now. Her BMI has probably gone down.
I would add professional tennis to that list.
The WNBA is a welfare extortion racket.
Without “support” from the NBA they would be long gone, and Griner would remained unknown.
I came across a YouTube video of all the Men’s Olympic Downhill races.
Guys going down the mountain on 220 cm wooden skis.
It seemed like half the time they were out of control. Almost on the edge of crashing.
Of course, the condition of the course was suspect many times too.
Now, the guy that comes in 37th place would probably beat Franz Klammer.
