“Decades ago, two high-achieving daughters of our friends got turned down for admission to medical school in Washington, D.C. because two minority applicants with far lower test scores were admitted to the school in their place.”

I am not doubting this happens but in this case how did they know the minority students’ test scores? I would not think that is public knowledge.

It may not be public knowledge, but I think it can be found out by somebody in the know. All you have to do is see who made the cut and then have someone check the test scores of the individuals. Sometimes people even tell others their scores openly. It may have taken a little bit of time to find out, but it could be done. It could also be that the school was “proud” of admitting the students they chose.
