The list of expert failures is a long one. The Vietnam War, which predated my youthful enthusiasm for experts, was launched by what David Halberstam mockingly called “the best and the brightest” in a book by the same name.

Those idiots thought you could fight a war like it was an accounting department in a business. So many bullets would equal so many kills.

Combat doesn't work that way.

The biggest failure in strategy in Vietnam was never crossing the so called DMZ. We allowed Vietnam to play wherever they wanted. We didn't play to win.

IMHO it's akin to trying to play a football game and promising to never cross the 50.

Second biggest failure was allowing the media complete freedom in how they reported the war. It would always be our side they showed....never North Vietnam's.

Third was Hanoi Jane. Should have never let her back in the country.
