I went there one time in the 1980’s. It was a pretty hellish place. There really is no reason to go back.

Alas, I wish this were so. I lived and worked in Taiwan in the 1980s during the pioneering days when she became Silicon Island and Chiang Ching Kuo ( then in ill health ) was President.
Back then, most Taiwan residents DID consider themselves Chinese and held hopes that China and Taiwan would eventually unify into one country NOT under communism, but under Sun Yat Sen’s Three Principles of the People.
That was then, today, the attitude has changed. A huge percentage of the Taiwan population DON’T consider themselves Chinese any longer and want Taiwan to be recognized as an INDEPENDENT country.
This is what angers the CCP, who have ALWAYS considered Taiwan historically to be part of China.

However, let's not forget that Trump flipped them off...several times, in his own way. Increased tariff's, rightfully calling it the "China" virus, etc.
