Companies were all convinced that China would be a huge market, but to access it they had to build in China to satisfy the CCP. What a colleague of mine learned after 5 years managing an assembly plant in China for our mutual employer is that the profits get eaten up by payoffs to every official who can manage to obstruct the company's output. As he put it: "There is not even a word for ethics in Chinese."
Over 4000 years, China has never had anything but dictatorship/kleptocracy as a form of government.
