I felt the same till it hit $5. Then for just short hop shopping trips I broke down just for economic purposes and found a 10yr old chevy volt hybrid for under $10k that has saved me about $200 a month in gas so far for the cost of about $40 a month in electricity in overnight charging. All other needs are met with my Dodge Ram. Hated to admit it, but it is saving me $$$ since I live 8 miles from town and is good for about 3 trips between charges and I typically never make more than 2.
First month I used it, 800 miles in the volt .1 gal fuel used, so far 2nd month 600 miles 0 fuel used. I can dig it. In 2 months I put about 8 gallons in the Ram just hauling lumber and such. So has saved me about 60% I figure so far.
When the battery craps out, i'll re-appraise my decision lol.
