Howard Schultz should have listened to me.
A decade ago, I wrote a book in which I observed that one of New York City’s most infamous and intractable municipal problems — its lack of public restrooms — had been in part solved by the private sector, and by one business in particular: Starbucks. That was the case in my neighborhood, at least: On any given afternoon, the Starbucks at Park Row and Beekman would have a restroom line ten or twenty long, mostly European tourists carrying Century 21 shopping bags — it must have been in a guidebook somewhere.
It was a classic case of the private sector creating a public good while bringing in new customers. But

Schultz ushered in a policy allowing anyone to come off the street and use Starbucks’ bathrooms, without having to pay like these customers. The move backfired when junkies started using the facilities to shoot up.
Only a few years after opening all of its bathrooms to the general public as a grand social-justice gesture, the coffee chain is closing stores around the country — mostly in big, progressive, Democrat-run cities — because the locations have become too dangerous for customers and staff. Homeless people camp in the bathrooms or make mad scenes in the cafes. So many junkies are using Starbucks restrooms to shoot up that the company has been obliged to install needle-disposal boxes in some of its stores — Welcome to Portland! — and the employees who had to clean up those messes understandably complained about possible exposure to HIV and hepatitis.
Here are two things that don’t go together very well: 1.) Selling caffeinated adult milkshakes for six bucks a cup and 2.) hepatitis.

FLASHBACK: Starbucks chairman announces free bathrooms and table space for the homeless

The ever well meaning Starbucks chairman, Howie Schultz, more terrified of bad publicity and claims of racism than anything in the world, has just announced a rather customer-unfriendly policy of opening Starbucks bathrooms (as well as table space) to all comers, including people who won’t spring for a $4 cup of coffee. Speaking to the Atlantic Council, Schultz said:
“We don’t want to become a public bathroom, but we’re going to make the right decision a hundred percent of the time and give people the key,” Schultz said, “because we don’t want anyone at Starbucks to feel as if we are not giving access to you to the bathroom because you are less than.”
Well, yes, you do, Howie. If you open the bathrooms to all comers, including non-paying customers, you’re turning Starbucks into a public bathroom. The fact that Starbucks will be the only business with such a policy means that all of the homeless will concentrate in these outlets. Rival store-owners and social service agencies will actually direct the homeless to Starbucks outlets for the free services. Large groups will congregate, moms with strollers drinking lattes and buying their little ones apple sauce in packets will sit cheek to jowl with hardcore drug-addicted homeless and now entertain requests for spare change.
This was all predictable at the time Starbucks started allowing anyone to use their restrooms.
This was done in part to make Trump look bad. Now it has backfired. Trump wins again.
Wait..... wait.....wait..... Nope! Still don’t care.
Anyone can choose to patronize Starbucks, or not to.
but Schultz knows nothing ,LOL
I went there to talk about racism. I was the only one.
Some just don’t get it. Even those that want to be POTUS as (Sgt)Schultz did.
Schultz has not paid any price. I have not read that he has been caned. So, nope, no punishment yet for his Godless philosophy.
Now they’ve closed 16 super profitable stores because of the CEO’s wokeness.
I guess being woke trumps his fiduciary duty to shareholders.
There used to be public restrooms in New Orleans back in the early 1970’s. It is a bit of a problem when there is nowhere to go if you have to.
On the other side of the coin you can just do it French style and pee on the sidewalk. Yes, that’s exactly what I saw the very first time I went there.
Starbucks is a great racket. High prices for sugared coffee drinks.
A cup of freshly ground, organic coffee, brewed at home, is much better, and much, much cheaper.
Not cause of wokeness, cause of unionization fears
Provincetown, Mass. The public restroom on the beach had an attendant for one reason. It was to keep the activities of the George Michael’s confined to relieving themselves.
Hmmm. Caning. Maybe the pain would get through his liberal mental fog.
Making life easier for the homeless to remain homeless will NOT end homelessness.
Nothing like going hungry to motivate someone to work.
Worse tasting coffee anyways which proves you don’t always get what you pay for.
