“Maybe Musk will pick it up cheap and repair it”

Seriously, maybe they could bring it back to earth orbit and go up and fix it.

Also, wondered if they thought of carrying a couple of replacement sensor cells.

Also, I wonder if the entire sensor cell was knocked out of commission.

From a write up on the effect of this strike:

https://www.space.com/james-webb-space-telescope-micrometeoroid-damage

When Webb's mission began, the affected C3 segment had a wavefront error of 56 nanometers rms (root mean square), which was in line with the 17 other mirror portions.

Post-impact, however, the error increased to 258 nm rms, but realignments to the mirror segments as a whole reduced the overall impact to just 59 nm rms. For the time being, the team wrote Webb's alignment is well within performance limits, as the realigned mirror segments are “about 5-10 nm rms above the previous best wavefront error rms values.”

For now, engineers are keeping an eye on potential future dust-generating events such as in 2023 and 2024, when Webb is expected to fly through particles left behind by Halley's Comet, according to Nature (opens in new tab).

“problem of a man made object being in a one million mile diameter orbit is that it would be impossible with presently known propellants to go out to it, stop, fix the problem, and return to earth .Let’s hope the telescope has self healing abilities.”

Elons Starship booster and stage two have a 100+ tonne payload to LEO that’s more than enough to get dragon sized capsule and falcon stage two under it to C3 which is escape velocity. The delta V needed to get out to the JWeb is less than C3 since by definition it is still in a earth bound orbit. The issue is sending men that far the trip would take a week or two it would have to be robotic repairs dragon doesn’t have the life support capacity for a three week journey. Starship itself is designed to go to Mars with a year plus journey Mars delta V plus capture and landing is four times what it would take to get to the Jweb and back so Starship could get men to the Jweb and back once it’s fully man rated. Take a new segment have the guys install it come home. Probably a month long round trip plus repair time.

It was a one in a million shot.

That's like the third one that's hit it now. Not that rare when you have literally quadrillions of micrometers fling around.

But that’s not the only issue. On the dark side signals would be significantly degraded. They could use a lunar orbiting satellite visible to earth as transmission repeater. It should be no problem other than a extended data transfer time. Btw, we can control unmanned exploration spacecraft, rovers etc, on other planets from a long ways off. It works well, but takes some time, depending on the distance.

Btw, if I’m not mistaken telescopes can remotely operate from anywhere on earth.

I know all that I was just feeling irritated about NASA and busting you chops a bit.

Sorry I won’t do it again.

It would take a bit more than that to bust my chops. ☺

When feeling sorry, have a beer!
